Chapter 4: I Get Your Drift

Meanwhile, 21st Century Religious America© is a convoluted place. Our most popular preachers build shiny mansions, are transported from gated compound to gated compound in shiny limousines and private jets, and dangle shiny prosperity in front of our noses, telling us God wants us to be rich, too, if only we’d believe and tithe. Many of the faithful rally around pictures of Jesus wrapped in an American flag, with an eagle, talons flashing, preying viciously where a peaceful dove once descended. Some of our time and energy as “Bible-Believing Christians” is spent “prayerfully discerning” who doesn’t get in. The story is told that our god is angry and ready to have us burn in eternal torment unless we wash ourselves in the blood of his son, who he tortured and killed just for us! And we wonder what so many people find so repulsive about Christianity? The biggest obstacle we Christians have to overcome is what we Christians sometimes say and do in the supposed service of our Christ.

Awakening-driftI Get Your Drift

When my sins are all the bolder
but I’m straining at your speck,
I just want you to know I get your drift.
With nothing across my shoulder,
but a cross around my neck.
It’s all a hollow show. I get your drift.
It’s like I woke up on the beach
To find you pushing out  to sea.
Giving up good ground
so you could get away from me.

Wayward Christian soldiers
Want to give you holy heck.
Fire in the hole! I get your drift.
I couldn’t get much colder,
and my life is just a wreck,
but I’ll tell you where to go, I get your drift.
It’s like I woke up on the beach
To find you pushing out  to sea.
Giving up good ground
so you could get away from me.

I am not an actor, but I play one on TV.
How can I follow Jesus
when he’s so nailed down in me?

As I get a little older,
as I’m further on the trek.
I learn that I don’t know, I get your drift.
Pushy push-and-pull Church,
gains us nothing but stiff necks.
I just want you to know, I get your drift.
